AIARG 2026

Architectural Inquiry and Applied Research Group Annual Conference

Presented through the three-platform system: a live demonstration of how thermodynamic accountability, participatory agency, and multi-scalar spatial research work as a unified epistemological instrument.

The Three-Platform Architecture

🗺️

EXPLORE

Multi-scalar spatial navigation

The spatial layer. Terra Forma cartography, Dymaxion-informed projections, Critical Zone section drawings, multi-scalar navigation from geological time to building detail.

ENGAGE

Participatory agency & the Boussole

The agency layer. The Boussole compass for collective orientation. Carte des Puissances for mapping actors, power, and communities of practice. Participatory research in action.

ENERGETIC

Thermodynamic accountability

The accountability layer. EMERGY accounting, Lagrangian material tracking, ΔE per intervention. Making visible what every material, every action, every process actually costs in energy terms.

How the Three Connect at AIARG

EXPLORE provides the spatial context — Critical Zone maps, multi-scalar site investigations, the Fuller–Arènes cartographic comparison rendered as navigable visualisations.

ENGAGE provides the political and participatory layer — the Boussole compass positions each research group's findings within a shared field of agency and collective orientation.

ENERGETIC provides the accountability — EMERGY values fill the compass with measurable evidence. Material trajectories translate spatial and political decisions into thermodynamic consequences.

Together, the three platforms make a single claim: research is not complete until it accounts for what things actually cost — in energy, in political consequence, in spatial change.

AT6012 Design Research: Technology Transformations

The eight student research groups of AT6012 — each investigating a distinct dimension of Marseille's urban metabolism — constitute the primary research substrate for the AIARG demonstration. Their findings populate the three platforms with real site data, real material inventories, and real community encounters.
